Brian Hartley began to write about decorated samian ware in 1953 and, with Brenda Dickinson, continued his work until his death in 2005. During that period a large collection of rubbings accumulated in files at his office at the University of Leeds. He never had time to mount them, and inevitably, over time, they steadily deteriorated, with both age and use.
The generous support of the Haverfield Trust, and the Roman Research Trust enabled Robert Hopkins to digitise the archive, so that not only was there a permanent record of the material, but that it could be put into the public domain on the Study Group for Roman Pottery website with the help of its former webmaster Ted Connell.
While the images here have been reduced to 96.5 dpi for screen purposes, the archive was originally scanned at 300 dpi and made available on a set of DVDs. Please contact the Study Group for more information.
